Don’s Deli in Boothwyn Creates Sandwich Celebrating Its Role in Mare of Easttown

You’re watching the action on HBO’s hit series, “Mare of Easttown.” You’re listening for the accent.

Now you can taste the sandwich, writes Hannah Kanik for phillyvoice.com.

Don’s Deli & Catering, 1509 Meetinghouse Road in Boothwyn, was one of the filming locations for the series. The deli created a hoagie to mark the honor.

“The Mare” is a hoagie with roasted turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayonnaise on a fresh Serpe & Sons Bakery roll.

“The ingredients of The Mare are similar to other sandwiches in our area, like the Gobbler and the Bobbie,” said Michael McKinney Jr., owner of the 62-year-old deli. “We chose this type of sandwich because it’s ‘a Delco thing’ and we named it after Delco’s favorite girl!”

Employees at first thought it was a joke when HBO location scouts visited the deli in 2019.

Filming took place at the deli on Nov. 4, 2019. Set designers, producers ate at Don’s during the filming process.

“Featuring Don’s Deli & Catering in the series was such a brightener for this area — it brought such a good vibe to our whole town,” said Amy Kilgore, McKinney’s sister, and Don’s Deli office manager.
