Within just a few years, the Central Bucks High School East boys’ swimming program suffered two tragic losses that left the team shaken, writes Krystle Rich for CBS News Philadelphia.
In 2023, 17-year-old swim team member Marcus Papanikolaou passed away in a car crash, and less than a year later, the boys’ longtime coach Ed Walsh died of brain cancer.
“It was like one tragedy after another here,” said head boys’ swim coach Kevin McCann. “It really becomes a higher level of work to get them physically, emotionally, and mentally able to perform and do what they need.”
In the face of grief, the team grew closer together and managed to deliver an impressive season despite the hardship they faced.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were undefeated, breaking 12 school records during the regular season.
“We had a really unique, special group of kids this year,” said head girls’ swim coach Heather Worby. “They set the goal at the beginning of the season, and they followed through.”
Both teams won the Colonial League Championship in the same year for the first time in the school’s history. The boys ended a 25-year drought, while the girls ended a 22-year drought.
According to the swim team captains, camaraderie was key to their success, ensuring every teammate felt included and ready to swim each day.
