Drexel Hill Little League honored the legacy of Jackie Robinson and the Negro Leagues with a special ceremony at the Dermond Recreation Area Park last week, writes Kerri Corrado for CBS News.
“These kids are out here learning not just about Jackie, but the Philadelphia Stars, the Hilldale Club, Birmingham Black Barrons, Indianapolis Clowns,” said Drexel Hill Little League Board Member Nicholas Hoyt. “These people walked so these kids can run.”
Robinson, a trailblazing sports icon, became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball.
All the participants in the ceremony wore the iconic No. 42, mirroring MLB’s annual tribute held each April 15, the league’s Jackie Robinson Day.
According to Drexel Hill Little League, this event teaches kids to overcome adversity and work as team players, while also enjoying themselves, as that is what baseball is all about.
“They get to learn the history of baseball, walk and learn about the pioneers that are responsible for them playing the game, and have fun,” said Ed Brown, the Mayor of Upper Darby.
