Lancaster Avenue AI Traffic Cameras Ease Radnor Congestion

Radnor is using AI -enhanced traffic cameras to ease traffic congestion on Lancaster Avenue.

Radnor Township is using AI-enhanced traffic lights with cameras and sensors to improve traffic flow at busy intersections on Lancaster Avenue, writes Shawnette Wilson for Fox 29 News.

Lancaster Avenue is known for heavy daily congestion and backups.

Township officials say the newly expanded AI-driven traffic light system will keep cars moving smoothly during peak hours.

The AI camera project began in 2020 at seven intersections, including the Route 76 interchange.

It has now entered a second phase this week, when seven additional heavily-traveled intersections along Lancaster Avenue were brought online.

That includes the complex six-leg Sproul Road intersection.

Township engineer Stephen Norcini said the AI approach was taken because traditional solutions, like adding lanes, are difficult in that area.

AI collects real-time data from the cameras and sensors, feeding into algorithms that adjust green light timing based on traffic conditions, he said.

There are conflict monitors so you don’t get green all around,  Norcini noted.

“Traffic is crazy, especially as the weather warms up. If they can regulate the lights to keep traffic moving smoothly, I’m all for that,” said Dorothea Davis, who travels Route 30 in Radnor every day.
