A developer’s proposal to the Pennsylvania Game Commission could give Delaware County its first swatch of Pennsylvania Game Land, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Game Lands are managed areas for hunting, hiking, fishing, and wildlife conservation.
Limerick Town Center LLC, a warehouse developer, has proposed trading 559 acres of land across three counties, including 177 acres in Edgmont Township, for a 55-acre state-owned property in Limerick, Montgomery County.
The Edgmont land is a portion of the old Sleighton Farm School grounds, currently owned by Elwyn near Ridley Creek State Park.
The Limerick property sits next to an industrial tract, formerly the Publicker distillery, already owned by the developer.
Residents in Limerick are opposed to the swap, fearing the deal would clear the way for a data center there.
Edgmont officials learned about the land swap offer on Jan. 16.
“We got an email from the game commission last week saying we’re interested in acquiring property in your township,” said Edgmont Township Manager Ken Kynett. “It was as much a surprise to us as anyone else.”
Kynett said open space would be a positive, but more information is needed before supporting the proposal.
