John Worley, a Ridley Park native, played a key role in the Gold Medal win of the U.S. men’s hockey team at the Winter Olympics by keeping the team in prime condition, writes Pat Gallen for CBS News Philadelphia.
Worley served as the team’s athletic trainer.
Worley was in Milan Cortina two weeks ago when the U.S. team took its first gold medal in ice hockey since 1980, beating out Canada.
Worley recalls the moment of Jack Hughes’ goal that won the game.
“I just remember the complete excitement, throwing my arms up in the air and jumping up and down. And just then, you turn to the people you work with and the players nearby. And it’s a complete Kumbaya-like love fest.”
The West Chester University alum is the current athletic director for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Before that, he spent 10 years as head athletic trainer for the Philadelphia Flyers, a team he grew up with.
“I look back on my career,” he said, “and I’ve been so fortunate and lucky to have the path that I’ve had, to be very honest.”
