The Delco Scrabble Club, meeting weekly at the Riddle Village retirement community in Media, has played a key role in turning the Philadelphia region into one of the most competitive Scrabble scenes in the nation, writes Abigail Covington and Earl Hopkins for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
One of the club’s members, Will Anderson, has won multiple tournaments and built a sizable online following, first on Twitch and later on YouTube.
He has over 70,000 subscribers and regularly posts videos exploring Scrabble history, including legendary games and players.
That has helped him to be a content producer at Scopely, the developer of the Scrabble app.
The Aston native said Philadelphia’s size helps explain why it produces so many strong players, adding that its competitive spirit likely plays a role as well.
The fact that Scrabble is a universally known game also helps, as many in the Delco Scrabble Club first learned to play at home before seeking tougher opponents, as their friends and family could no longer compete with them.
“If you’re that person in your family, we’re waiting for you with open arms,” said Anderson.
