Temple Nurse, Turnpike Workers Reunite After Saving Collapsed Downingtown Driver

Nurse Cindy Zimmerman has reconnected with two PA turnpike workers after they worked together to save a collapsed driver in Downingtown.

Temple Health clinical nurse manager Cindy Zimmerman has forged a new friendship with two fellow Good Samaritans after the trio worked together to save a collapsed driver in Downingtown, writes Courtenay Harris Bond for PhillyVoice.

On Dec. 10, Zimmerman was driving home from her shift at Temple’s Chestnut Hill Hospital when she saw an alarming scene. Near the turnpike’s Downingtown interchange, she saw a car pulled over, and the driver appeared to be slumped in the front seat.

Two Pennsylvania Turnpike workers, John Gallagher and Doug Sarver, had pulled over to help the driver and call emergency services. Once Cindy arrived, she noticed the driver was in cardiac arrest, and immediately began CPR.

EMS arrived soon after to take over. Thanks to Zimmerman, Gallagher and Sarver, the patient was stabilized just in time, and taken to the hospital thereafter.

Now, the three bystanders have reconnected. Zimmerman took note of the maintenance truck’s four-digit code and reached out to Gallagher and Sarver via the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

The two also showed up at Zimmerman’s hospital with flowers and a card.

The friends are also hoping to have dinner with the woman they saved soon to celebrate her recovery and their new connections.
