A 72-year-old Drexel Hill woman trapped in her home by a fallen tree was rescued by neighbors after severe thunderstorms and wind hit the area Thursday, writes Ellen Koldziej for Fox 29.
Ten-year-old Audie Patrick Murphy saw the massive tree fall on the Bond Avenue home of Alice Thomas and alerted his father, military veteran Christopher Murphy, who rescued her from the rubble.
Thomas, who suffered only minor injuries, is expected to recover. All three of her cats were found unharmed.
“I was able to breach the door with my shoulder, and I was able to hear some sound, so I figured she was in the room, and I started calling out, and so she responded,” Christopher Murphy said.
He lifted part of the fallen roof off of the woman, holding it in place until rescue crews arrived..
Nick Vettese, another neighbor, said they live in a great neighborhood where “everybody loves each other.”
“It’s awesome,” he said.
Christopher’s wife, Clara, was proud of her husband and proud that “we can teach our kids to run and help others who, in that moment, couldn’t help themselves.”
Thomas was grateful for the support and thankful to Christopher and everyone who helped her.
