Bonner-Prendie Named PIAA Champs for First Time in School History

The Bonner-Prendie Friars boys' basketball team have won a PIAA championship for the first time in the school's history.

Bonner-Prendie earned its first state basketball championship in school history in boys’ basketball when it beat District 3 Champ West York, 62-35, on Friday for the PIAA Class 5A title at Hershey’s Giant Center.

The last time Bonner won a basketball championship was 38 years ago, in 1988, when the Friars won the Catholic League championship, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bonner-Prendie’s -foot-3 junior guard Korey Francis is proud to have finally made Bonner-Prendie’s championship wall.

“I always wanted to be a part of that wall, and winning [the state championship] means more to me because I grew up [at Bonner-Prendie], my father played here,” Francis said. “This means we did it. This team will one day be on that wall with everyone else who won something at Bonner.”

Francis, the PCL MVP, helped make it happen, scoring a game-high 18 points. Next highest scorers were  Jakeem Carroll’s 14 points, DeShaun Holden’s 11, and Kam Jackson’s 10, with a game-high 6 assists.

“I always thought we could win this,” said Bonner-Prendie coach Billy Cassidy.

He saw something special happening coming into the season, with a team that loved basketball, loved practice, and loved being around each other.
