Students Partner Up to Sustain Food Pantry at Drexel Neumann Academy

Tegan-Williams-Gilber and a fellow student talk about the food pantry at Drexel Neumann Academy in Chester.

Drexel Neumann Academy students in Chester can take advantage of a food pantry built at the school this past summer by the national nonprofit Kids Against Hunger United, reports Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.

The pantry serves the students and their families.

It’s sustained throughout the school year by the “Community Kindness Club,” made up of Academy students in partnership with Villa Maria and Devon Prep.

“My favorite part about this is that I know that when I leave here, I will have something that people can remember and something to pass off…It comes from a good place in your heart to think about others,” said Academy eighth grader Tegan Williams-Gilbert.

Kids Against Hunger United founder and executive director Heather Griesser LaPierre said it’s about “kids coming together and helping one another.”

If students need food, they can just go down to the pantry and shop. The faculty also sends bags home with families.

“It’s supporting the families with what it is that they need and meeting them where they’re at,” said Alice Sylvester, president of Drexel Neumann Academy. “It’s a way for them to help make sure their children are being fed.”
