Di Bruno Bros. Pull Back Sad, But Not Surprising, Customers Say

The 8,000 square-foot Di Bruno Bros. store in Wayne.

Di Bruno Bros. customers will miss the three stores that are closing in Wayne, Ardmore, and Center City, but they aren’t surprised by the move, writes Denali Sagner and Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The gourmet food grocer decided to refocus its energy on stores at the Italian Market and Rittenhouse, as well as its online business.

Customers said they’ve noticed a change in quality in the last few years.

Narberth resident Xavier Hayden stopped going to Di Bruno’s after noticing a change in the rolls, bread, and other items that gave the company its reputation.

“The quality went down, the taste went down,” Hayden said. “Why am I going to pay upmarket prices for a midmarket product?”

Di Bruno’s came out of South Philadelphia, established in 1939. It developed a strong presence on the Main Line when it opened at the Ardmore Farmers Market in 2011 and in Wayne in Delaware County in 2021.

Mike Manley, a cartoonist from Upper Darby, said he frequented the Ardmore store. He thought the food was very good but also expensive, and everyone’s watching their budgets.

He liked the store for its customer service, talking with the cheese mongers, and trying samples.
