Philadelphia Union’s Familiar Faces Drew Augustin Anello to the Team

Agustin Anello has always thought of himself as an American even though he’s spent half his life outside the United States, writes Jonathan Tannewald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

He was born in the Miami suburb of Hialeah to Argentine parents, and grew up in Cape Coral, but moved to Barcelona, Spain, at age 10 because of his father’s work.

Anello turned soccer pro in 2021 after playing in the youth ranks of the Belgian club Lommell.

So when the Philadelphia Union, based in Chester, made him an offer to join the team, it was an easy decision.

He already had two friends on the team—Nathan Hamel and Bruno Damiani.

“The guys have really made it feel like home, so that’s quite nice,” Anello said. “You know how things work when a lot of things come together, and, yeah, the feeling of coming back to my country to play was also a big factor. So I feel a lot of things came together for this to be possible.”

He liked the Union’s track record, and he was intrigued by their style of play, their work ethic, and how they train.
