The Philadelphia Union has hired South African coach Bradley Carnell as its new head coach, reports the KYW Newsradio staff.
He comes to the Union after two years coaching the St. Louis City SC. During his first year there, he led St. Louis to the best season ever for an MLS expansion team. St. Louis went on to win the Western Conference title.
Even so, the team had a disappointing second season and Carnell left halfway through.
Before St. Louis, Carnell was an assistant manager and interim head coach for the New York Red Bulls for five years. The Bulls are the Union’s conference rivals.
Carnell is the Philadelphia Union’s fourth manager.
Jim Curtin, who had been the Union manager since 2014, was dismissed in November after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Curtin was the longest-tenured manager in Union history and the second-longest tenured anywhere in Major League Soccer through last season.
The 45-year-old has been one of the most respected coaches in the MLS.
He’s a former Villanova University star player who won Major League Soccer’s coach of the year award in 2020 and 2022.
