Two Haverford women bring their years of experience as foster parents to their nonprofit Well Rooted, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.
Katie Casey and her friend Sarah Todd have been fostering for about a decade.
Their nonprofit serves families that have just welcomed a new foster child into their home, which can be “a really stressful time in the foster care journey,” Todd said.
They support families who are reunifying after spending a lot of time in the foster care system.
Well Rooted is also a safety net to young adults aging out of the foster system.
A Well Rooted mentor helps the young adults transition to a life of independence. They can provide guidance on issues that parents usually help with, from cooking a lasagna to buying a car to getting an apartment.
The goal is to make them feel valued and seen, to feel empowered to chase the dreams they have, and to see that the road ahead is broad, Todd said.
A dinner every month for the young adults provides a chance to connect with others who have lived through similar experiences in the foster care system.
“It’s just a time to build community,” Todd said.
