For Lower Prices and Quality, These Supermarkets Come Out Ahead

A survey by the nonprofit Delaware Valley Consumer Checkbook compared prices and quality at area supermarkets.

For overall quality, Wegman’s continues to score high, while offering competitive pricing among area supermarkets, writes Kevin Brasler for Delaware Valley Consumers’ Checkbook, as printed in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The nonprofit surveyed its members on quality and prices at area supermarkets.

Wegmans was rated “superior” by 85 percent of its customers on produce, meat, and overall quality.

Its prices are about 2 percent lower than average prices at ShopRite and Giant, 12 percent lower than Acme, and 25 percent lower than Whole Foods.

The Germany-based discount stores Aldi and Lidl offer the biggest savings, but have limited brands and sizes.

The survey found that Aldi’s prices are 35 percent lower than the all-store average, with Lidl’s 26 percent lower.

Amazon Fresh’s prices were about 16 percent lower than the all-store average. Walmart’s were 10 percent lower.

Whole Foods remains the most expensive choice, with prices about 32 percent higher than the average prices of all stores surveyed.

Prices at the Acme, Giant, and ShopRite locations surveyed were about the same from store to store.

Warehouse clubs will save you money, but customers have to shop often to cover the cost of the annual membership fee.
