Rising grocery prices getting you down?

Try growing your own vegetables, buying in bulk, or distributing the burden throughout the family. That’s what’s worked for Darby resident Paula Brown and her family, writes   Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Luckily, Brown has had a green thumb since age 13.

Her produce section lines the perimeter of her deck.

“I grow everything: onions, mint, basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage,” she said, also pointing out collard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and lettuce.

She’s putting 32 quarts of tomatoes in jars, freezes her green beans, and makes grape juice and jelly from grapes in the back.

“I make so much raspberry jam and preserves and it just saves us so much money.”

Brown recycles parts of her crop so she doesn’t even need to buy seeds.

Her daughter and her husband’s nephew also help pay for the household food and everyone keeps an eye out for the best deals.

“The two of them have been so instrumental financially and with the gardening, that has saved us so much money. I just buy meat. I just buy meat now.”
