Design work is underway for a museum dedicated to the historic SS United States, which is headed to Florida after decades docked in South Philadelphia before more recently moving to Alabama, writes Tyler Thrasher for FOX 29 Philadelphia.
The highly anticipated SS United States Museum and Visitor Experience in Florida will honor the legacy of “America’s Flagship” and showcase some of the most iconic features of the SS United States, including its towering six-story funnels.
For the museum’s planning and development, the SS United States Conservancy selected a team that includes Thinc Design, LMN Architects, and the engineering firm Buro Happold. The design will stay true to the ship’s mid-century modern aesthetic and highlight its groundbreaking technology.
The museum will also display thousands of original artifacts from the vessel, like one of its massive five-bladed propellers and revolutionary radar mast.
“We are deeply committed to celebrating the enduring legacy of America’s Flagship, and we have assembled an extraordinary team to help us realize our vision,” said Susan Gibbs, Conservancy president and granddaughter of the SS United States’ designer. “By incorporating iconic components from the historic ocean liner into an architecturally stunning land-based museum, the SS United States will continue to excite and inspire future generations.”
