A sweeping restoration effort is underway at one of Montgomery County’s most recognizable historic sites, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Tonight.
Washington Memorial Chapel, the National Historic Landmark bordering Valley Forge National Historical Park, has begun a multi-year, multi-million-dollar renovation aimed at revitalizing its campus.
The first phase focuses on Patriot’s Hall, the gathering space adjoining the chapel’s main sanctuary. Designed by Kara White of The Range Designer, the room will transform into a ballroom by early 2026, retaining its Gothic windows, stone walls, and original leaded-glass bookcases.
The project is part of a larger vision led by Washington Memorial Heritage, the nonprofit overseeing the chapel’s historical preservation. The organization is in the midst of a $5 million capital campaign supporting renovations across the nearly 50-acre campus, including future plans for an education center and expanded café and retail spaces at the Cabin Shop.
While some buildings pose engineering challenges due to their incremental construction over decades, designers emphasize that the chapel remains a breathtaking example of Old World craftsmanship. When complete, leaders say the updated campus will strengthen the site’s mission to inspire visitors and honor its legacy.
