Delaware County Retired Couple Keep Coffee, Community Flowing

Josiah Kessler, the adopted son of Mark and Beth Kessler, serves customer some Third Horse coffee at a community event. Right now, the coffee and merchandise is sold online out of Brookhaven but the hope is to eventually open a brick-and-mortar store.

A retired Delaware County couple is “brewing community one cup at a time” from their online coffee shop based in Brookhaven, writes Tamala Edwards for 6abc.

Mark and Beth Kessler co-founded Third Horse Coffee about three years ago. They sell specialty coffee, artisan roasted from Golden Valley Farms, a family-owned West Chester roaster.

“It’s really good coffee,” says Josiah Kessler, a sales associate with Third Horse Coffee.

Josiah is also the couple’s youngest son, one of three children the Kesslers adopted from China.

They started the nonprofit to help him and to provide a place where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can find meaningful work and be part of the community.

“It was perfect for Josiah’s gifts and personality. He loves people,” says Beth Kessler, “He’s got a giant heart, and he gets to use it.”

Josiah fills orders for merchandise, along with the eight roasts sold online.

Each purchase comes with a handwritten note.

Josiah’s Chinese Zodiac sign is a horse. A horse was also the divine sign the Kesslers received before adopting Josiah, when they saw a wild horse come down a path at Assaleague Island, followed by a second and a third.

The experience inspired the coffee shop’s name.
