Many of Philadelphia’s suburban communities have some charming main streets, including three in Delaware County, writes Regan Fletcher Stephens, Emily Goulet, Shaunice Ajiwe, Victor Fiorillo, and Claudia Gavin for Philadelphia Magazine.
If you have the time, try strolling down Media Borough’s State Street, Ridley Park’s Hinkley Avenue, and Haverford’s Brookline Blvd.
Media’s downtown highlights community friendliness and unique independent shops, especially on Wednesday evenings, May through September, with its weekly “Dining Under the Stars” event.
Ridley Park’s Hinkley Avenue hub features Ardour Bakery, with its popular chocolate croissants, Ridley Park Florist for your tropical plant needs, and Dolan’s, a neighborhood favorite since the 1950s. Enjoy a pint with owner Pat Dolan’s Amish beef smashburger.
You’ll find unique shops and eateries at Havertown’s Brookline Blvd.
Plant Roots is a woman-owned houseplant outpost connected to a cozy bookstore and coffee shop, the Bookery Coffeehouse. Up the street is Novita Boutique, a women’s clothing store, plus Centrella’s Deli and Koffmeyer’s for ice cream, both around since the 1970s.
Elsewhere, there’s The Wildflower Collective, a community space for women; the Hendren House interior design studio; and Sophie’s BBQ, a family-owned recent addition to the food scene.
