Jerrell Gibbs, who once dreamed of playing in the NFL, shifted to art and has seen a swift ascent in his career, culminating in his first solo museum exhibition at the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, writes Chadd Scott for Forbes.
A photograph of his wife and daughter inspired the direction of his career.
“I looked at it and I said, ‘I feel like drawing that,’” Gibbs recalled. It had been years since he last picked up a pencil, admitting that he had almost forgotten the skill.
Impressed by his initial work, his wife gifted him painting supplies for Father’s Day the following year. He began painting that day and soon enrolled in the Maryland Institute College of Art, regarded as one of the nation’s leading art schools.
Recognition began during the spring semester of his first year when the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery contacted him. It’s only gone up from there.
His works are now on display through March 1, 2026, at the Brandywine Museum of Art in the exhibition Jerrell Gibbs: No Solace in the Shade, highlighting the first decade of his career and featuring more than 30 paintings from public and private collections across the United States and Europe.
The exhibit showcases Gibbs’ large-scale figurative works that showing family, friends, and community while centering Black life.
