Stephen Starr to Revive One of Nation’s Most Influential Restaurants of Last Two Decades in Philadelphia

Stephen Starr is planning to bring Mission Chinese Food, the celebrated New York spot, to Philadelphia some time in the near future.

Stephen Starr is bringing Mission Chinese Food, the celebrated New York spot often hailed as one of the nation’s most essential restaurants of the last 20 years, to Philadelphia, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Starr announced the planned revival in a recent interview but did not provide a timeline for the project, only noting that the new restaurant will be in Philadelphia. For the project, Starr will partner with the New York restaurant’s owner, chef Danny Bowien.

Bowien opened Mission Chinese Food in 2012 in Manhattan before relocating it to East Broadway, where its impressive menu quickly developed a loyal following. The success of the restaurant then led to opening a second New York location in Brooklyn.

The first location of Mission Chinese closed in 2020 due to pandemic-related reasons, followed by the Brooklyn location in 2022. The concept then came back last year in the form of a popular pop-up in New York’s Chinatown neighborhood, and has since had its residency extended indefinitely.

Starr also currently has an unnamed restaurant being developed in the former Devon Seafood Grill home in Rittenhouse Square.
