Pica’s served up its last meal at its Upper Darby dining room on West Chester Pike on Sunday as it moves to a new takeout location in Broomall, writes Courtney Cherry and Joe Holden for CBS News Philadelphia.
The family restaurant has served its famous upside-down pizza in the dining room since 1971, along with other traditional Italian meals.
It was a favorite local gathering spot for families and friends celebrating baby showers, wedding showers, parties, weddings, and after-show gatherings.
“It’s so humbling to our family,” Frank Pica said. “What’s so amazing is all the memories that people have and how they’re just sharing with us and sending us cards and talking about their childhood memories.”
The owners of Pica’s announced in March on Facebook that they would be closing in Upper Darby after nearly 70 years, moving to a smaller takeout shop in the Lawrence Park Industrial Center in Broomall.
Pica’s takeout in Upper Darby will stay open through the end of the year.
Pica’s also has a second restaurant in West Chester. Gift cards for the Upper Darby location will be honored at the West Chester restaurant.
