Following an incident where a student brought a gun to school, North Penn High will require all students to pass a daily weapons detection system, writes Vik Raghupathi for KYW Newsradio.
School officials said a 16-year-old student brought a handgun to campus last week. He was taken into police custody and charged.
At a school board meeting two days later, North Penn School District Superintendent Todd Bauer said that the Evolv detection system was installed the next morning and will remain in use. He explained that the district already owned the equipment and was reviewing overall security measures, though some parents expressed frustration that it was not implemented earlier.
“If it is not implemented every day for every child, it’s ineffective,” said Shannon Main. “Your security protocols are a failure if a kid can walk into a building with a handgun in his waistband.”
Several parents stressed the importance of a more proactive approach to identifying students who may need support and counseling services.
“North Penn needs to do better about mental health and supporting children who need intervention, whether the child can verbally identify this or not,” said Nicole Brown.
