PHL Food Pantry to Feed Federal Workers During Government Shutdown

TSA agents and air traffic controllers will continue to work under the government shutdown, but without pay.

The Philadelphia International Airport is soliciting companies to set up a food pantry for federal workers working without pay during the government shutdown, writes Sean Kitchen for The Keystone.

“As you may be aware, many dedicated public servants are experiencing financial hardship due to missed paychecks. In response, we are organizing a food pantry to provide essential groceries and supplies to federal workers and their families during this difficult time,” reads a letter posted on Reddit.

The airport is seeking donations, including monetary donations, non-perishable food items, toiletries, or grocery card gift cards, the letter states.

Philadelphia’s Department of Aviation created the food pantry for TSA agents and air traffic controllers who are being forced to work without pay during the shutdown because they are considered essential employees.

Most federal employees have stopped receiving paychecks.

The workers have had to contact mortgage lenders and landlords to put off mortgage payments and rent without penalty. Same thing with large car notes and college loans, said Phil Glover, District 3 National Vice President with the American  Federal Government Employees Union.

US Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Philadelphia), recently introduced legislation protecting federal workers from evictions, foreclosures and other financial issues during the shutdown.
