Delaware County Community College Strengthens Welding Program to Meet Growing Need for Skilled Workers

Delaware County Community College has expanded its welding program to better prepare students and meet the growing need for skilled workers.

Delaware County Community College has expanded its welding program to better prepare students and meet the growing need for skilled workers, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.

The United States will need 320,000 welders by 2029, according to the American Welding Society, due to mass retirements and rapid industry growth.

“We have many employers who come to campus or reach out to us looking to fill multiple positions at their company,” said DCCC spokesperson Jennifer Schu.

Interest among DCCC students is growing, with 75 students currently enrolled and classes over 90 percent full.

For 18-year-old volunteer firefighter Robert Herman, welding offers job security and honors his family.

“My dad was into it before he passed away, and then my uncle took over and taught me everything I know,” he said.

But with student interest growing, it has become challenging to find enough qualified instructors.

“At present we have excellent long-term welding instructors who have been with DCCC for years,” said Schu. “Many of the trades areas have a tough time getting instructors, especially during the day because they are working in the field. We are always interested in talking with adjuncts looking to teach.”
