Delaware County natives know that sometimes the best eating experience isn’t in the fanciest restaurants, but in a place that doesn’t draw much attention to itself, yet has the distinction of creating dishes that are classic Delco.
Here are three noteworthy places, as selected by Jason Sheehan, Kae Lani Palmisano, and Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.
Jason Sheehan prefers the comic book-discount sock- custom airbrush art atmosphere of Booth’s Corner in Garnet Valley.
Here you’ll find Jerry’s Roastbeef and More. It’s mostly a counter, a table, and a guy with a carving knife, but it has one of the best roast beef sandwiches in the region, Sheehan writes.
Likewise, Tony’s Tavern, a Collingdale dive bar, has the best roast pork sandwich, writes Victor Fiorillo.
It’s a succulent sandwich sold on Thursdays; it’s garlicky, salty, and set on a Liscio roll from Tony’s kitchen.
Romano’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant in Essington is the birthplace of the stromboli, and it shows, writes Kae Lani Palmisano.
Romano’s “original” pepperoni stromboli is a massive dinner roll without bread filler, dense with spicy pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, and capicola, with melted American cheese, she writes.
