Odor Alert. Delaware County’s Smelling Bad Again

A far-reaching foul odor has once again led to resident complaints and speculation in Delaware County.

The authorities have been alerted.

The county’s 911 center received multiple reports about a gas odor that has returned to Delaware County. The county’s  Emergency Services Department is investigating, according to FOX29.

Over at the Springton Reservoir on 252, a Reddit user described a diarrhea smell.

County residents from Clifton Heights to Marcus Hook are talking about an odor of human excrement, skunk, sulfur, rotten eggs, sauerkraut, dead animal or human bodies, and other colorful descriptions.

PECO responded to 41 calls so far this week about the odor. One thing is certain, according to PECO spokesperson Candice Womer. It’s not related to natural gas.

On the environmental front, the Department of Environmental Protection has not received any reports.

One theory posed is that a Monday tanker spill of 2,000 gallons of home heating oil in Upper Providence, some of which got into Ridley Creek, was the culprit.

Others are blaming seasonal turnover at Springton Reservoir when bottom sediment is stirred, releasing sulfur and methane into the air.

A similar situation happened in 2020 when residents also reported a foul odor that was hard to pin down.
