Author Beck Dorey-Stein, a Narberth native and former White House stenographer, recently published her third book and second novel, Spectacular Things, partly inspired by former Eagle and Super Bowl champion Nick Foles, writes Lisa Dukart for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
When her book kept facing obstacles, the author began to doubt it would ever materialize. But like the 2017 Eagles and their quarterback Foles, she persevered. She challenged skepticism about the book’s focus on female soccer players while managing the challenges of a newborn and parenthood.
“There are so few women’s sports novels out there, which is why I was so proud of [this book], and also why I had to fight so hard to write it,” said Dorey-Stein.
Spectacular Things, released on July 1, follows single mom Liz Lowe and her daughters, Mia and Cricket, both of whom play soccer, as they face life-changing struggles and wrestle with whether to put aside their passion for each other.
The book, which was picked for Reese Witherspoon’s book club in July, pushes readers to contemplate “what we are willing to give up for people we love, and the danger of ever expecting anything in return,” said the author.
