A home-grown family pizza business, Cocco’s Pizza, in Delaware County added a gelato shop next to their Primos business in 2011, and now there’s a gelato pop-up, Cocco’s Gelato, from Matt and Jenica Cocco, writes Chloe Pantazi-Wolber for Philadelphia Magazine.
You can find the couple pushing a roving gelato cart up to restaurants and cafes around Philadelphia, offering up innovative gelato flavors like peanut butter fudge Orea, Italian rainbow cookie, and pistachio with house-made nut paste.
Cocco’s Gelato has been in business since December 2024 and it’s made a good impression on Philadelphia’s ice cream scene.
Matt’s dad, Michael Cocco, opened Cocco’s Pizza in 1978. Matt learned how to make gelato from his mom when the gelato shop opened.
The family sold the pizza and gelato shops in 2022. Matt went to work for an Italian company selling gelato ingredients to gelaterias and bakeries.
He next got a job at a Center City restaurant where he started a gelato program there.
Matt met his wife, Jenica, on a dating app and by their third date they were making gelato together.
With Matt’s gelato expertise and Jenica’s marketing and social media experience, they decided to launch Cocco’s Gelato.
