A 55-year-old Uber driver from Upper Darby waited two hours to find a suitable fare from Citizens Bank Park.
He needed a fare that would make up for his lost time driving to the stadium and waiting in the lot, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The fare would earn him $24. Uber was charging the passenger more than $50.
At the same time, post-game fans complain how hard it is to find Uber drivers to take them home.
“Uber is exploiting all parties here,” the driver said.
Drivers said the stadium situation highlights decreased driver pay, a sudden drop-off in “surge” pricing and a “black box” algorithm on the Uber app that no longer shows them what riders are paying or how a fare is calculated.
The Upper Darby driver said his recent take for seven days of driving was $700. He would have made twice as much a couple of years ago, he said.
Uber has recently doubled the $5 surcharge drivers receive for completed rides that start from the stadium, in addition to the rate of pay on those rides, said Uber spokesperson Freddi Goldstein.
