A Chadds Ford farmstand that over time provided more than 50 different vegetables, fruits, and flowers grown on the 60-acre Hill Girt Farm is closing up shop, and its owner is retiring, writes Jim Graham for The Hunt.
H.G. Haskell III, known as “H,” opened SIW Vegetables 40 years ago along the Brandywine Creek.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Haskell said. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many local chefs and so many wonderful people from this community. We’ve seen the farm grow and change over the years and weather many challenges. I’m grateful for all the support from our customers, and I’ll miss seeing everyone come through the stand each week.”
The Hill Girt Farm has been in Haskell’s family since his grandfather, Hal Sr., purchased the land back in 1910 to run a dairy farm.
Since then, his grandson’s SIW Vegetables has employed more than 40 workers during the busy season.
Garlic was SIW’s first crop. That was followed by corn, tomatoes, potatoes, Dr. Martin’s lima beans, and more.
Haskell’s Silver Queen corn had an almost cult-like following.
Beyond fresh produce, SIW was also a gathering place for neighbors and a place for community.
