Community-supported agriculture, or CSA, offers an effective way to support local farmers while putting farm-fresh produce on your table, writes Lillian Gerczyk for the Philadelphia Magazine.

Out of the 19 Philadelphia-area farms and farmers who are offering CSA programs for this spring and summer season, two are in Delaware County.

Red Hill Farm in Aston is owned by The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. The farm has a 120-person CSA program that runs from early June through mid-November, for 24 weeks total. The share costs $775 and can be split with a family member or friend.

Shares include full access to the you-pick garden as well as activities in the children’s garden, harvest fest, and farm-to-table dinners.

Meanwhile, Urban Roots Farm, a 26-acre farm established in 2017 in Newtown Square, offers around ten pounds of about one-dozen types of vegetables and herbs in every share. There is also the “City Share” option that includes six to eight items. Several add-ons are also available, such as flowers, bread, cheese, eggs, and fruit.

The CSA runs from the third week of June through late December and costs between $720 and $1,200.
