Nine Delaware County schools in four school districts will be able to install solar panels partly paid for with state funds, writes Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
State grants covering up to 50 percent of the cost of solar panels were awarded through the bi-partisan-supported Solar for Schools legislation sponsored by State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler of Philadelphia.
There are 25 solar panel grants totaling $22.6 million, covering schools in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, and Delaware counties.
The solar panels, once installed, will help lower energy costs for the participating schools.
Receiving the funds are:
Haverford School District
Chatham Park Elementary, $296,976;
Rose Tree Media School District, $229,833;
Upper Darby School District
Bywood Elementary, $323,213;
Primos Elementary, $334,913;
Hillcrest Elementary, $446,713;
Stonehurst Hills Elementary, $359,288;
Drexel Hill Middle School, $500,000;
Westbrook Park Elementary, $431,600;
William Penn School District
Park Lane Elementary, $500,000.
Projects statewide range from solar arrays on large tracts of open land to compact panels on school roofs.
“It felt like evidence that this sort of program has broad appeal, even in a super politically polarized world about green energy and energy in general,” said Rep. Fiedler, chair of the House Energy Committee.
