Delaware County made history June 4 by becoming the first Philadelphia suburb to describe itself as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ and for transgender residents, writes Alaina Beltran for CBS 10 Philadelphia.
Delaware County Councilmembers voted unanimously on Resolution 2025-09 to reaffirm its commitment to protect LGBTQ+ and transgender residents.
The vote was taken as part of Pride Month, which included a Pride Flag raising and a public reading of the resolution.
The legislation is committed to protecting the equal rights, dignity, and access to healthcare for all individuals.
About 20 percent of the U.S. population identify as LGBTQ+, with 115,000 of those individuals living in Delaware County, officials said.
The resolution particularly benefits residents seeking transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive procedures.
One element of the resolution states that county personnel are prohibited from assisting out-of-state investigations that target individuals seeking or providing gender-affirming healthcare unless required by lawful authority.
“All of us are better off when all of us are protected,” said Council President Dr. Monica Taylor. “All of us are better off when none of our neighbors are afraid of being targeted for who they are – especially by their own government.”
