It was overcast and rainy this past Saturday, which would sadden most festival organizers, but for the organizers of the Havertown Irish Festival, it was just a typical day in Ireland, writes Katie Katro for 6abc.
The township had its seventh annual Irish Festival on Saturday, and the weather cleared up enough for the bands to play.
“I love listening to Irish music. I’m a drummer myself, so I come out to hear the Irish bands,” said Robert Alkins, of Northeast Philadelphia.
The crowds danced to the music of international touring bands from Ireland.
Thousands of people turned out for one of the county’s signature events.
“They love it; they love the beer garden, the crafts, the Irish music. Delaware County is known as the 33rd county of Ireland because of the Irish population, so this is a perfect fit for Delco,” said Tom Kelly, Irish Festival director.
Local businesses were out in force along East Eagle Road.
The kids played on an inflatable slide while adults sampled some Guinness and remembered a time when they were young, attending kitchen parties where they “sing, play their music, and just be together,” as recalled by Jenaia Steward, a musician with The Devil’s Brigade.
