A Wheelwright’s 1798 Home Is Up for Sale in Wallingford

A Wallingford 1798 home is a unique historic home available for sale.

A Wallingford 1798 home built in 1798 by Wheelwright James Hinkson is available for sale, writes Paul Jablow for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“All the houses I’ve lived in have had quirky and interesting histories,” said current owner Cathy Osborne.

The home was originally built as two houses side by side, with a second house for a blacksmith.

In fact, the house today still has two separate third floors in keeping with the original design intent.

Over the many decades and centuries, the second house has served as a general store and a summer resort. Together, the two buildings are known as “Hinkson’s Corner.”

Cathy and husband Gerry Osborne bought the property in 1998.

The couple had no idea when the combined houses became just a residence. The previous owners lived there for about 50 years.

Initially, the Osbornes liked that the property was in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District of their two daughters, but now the daughters are grown, and the couple is retiring to South Carolina.

Cathy is a former education administrator, and Gerry is a systems analyst for the Department of Defense.

The house is listed by Jeanne Maillet of BHHS Fox & Roach Media for $875,000.
