Walgreens is planning to shutter 500 stores nationwide this year, including four in the Philadelphia region, with two located locally, writes Lori Comstock for the Bucks County Courier Times.
The move is part of the pharmacy giant’s larger plan to close 1,200 stores it calls “underperforming” over the next three years. The cost-cutting “turnaround plan” aims to help stabilize Walgreens’ main retail pharmacy focus.
The company reported a $3 billion loss in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024. Over the last ten years, Walgreens has closed almost 2,000 locations.
The two local stores closing are the Norristown location on Dekalb Pike, closing May 19, and the Southampton store on 2nd Street Pike, which will end trading on May 22.
Also scheduled to shut on May 22 is the store on East Street Road in West Chester. Meanwhile, the store on West Cheltenham Avenue in Wyncote closed on May 15.
Patients who fill prescriptions at closing locations will be notified by mail, and in most cases, their prescriptions will be transferred to the nearest Walgreens or to a location of their choice.
