Delaware County Tweaks Healthcare Response to Crozer Closings

Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital is one of two hospitals left in Delaware County to serve patients.

With only two hospitals left in the county, Riddle Hospital in Media and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, officials are focusing on making sure those facilities have what they need to meet Delaware County healthcare demands from patients no longer able to access the Crozer Health system, writes Justin Udo for KYW Newsradio.

The county has weekly calls with those feeling the brunt of the closures to see how it can best support them, said Delaware County Council Chairman Dr. Monica Taylor.

“We’ve had working groups going through everything from healthcare sustainability, to how do we help support the hospitals, to our public health response, are we getting out there to the community, and how can they reach out if they have questions.”

Temporary EMS services are filling in for services previously handled by Crozer to give municipalities time to work out their own EMS service contracts.

Three regional providers are offering helicopter support for emergencies, and the county’s emergency services team is now training on the use of air support since there are no trauma centers left in Delaware County.

Now, the county is looking at proposals for a mental health or behavioral health provider.
