Delaware County ranked in second place among Pennsylvania counties that have the highest Alzheimer’s rates, according to a recently released report by Stacker.
Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It is one of the top ten causes of death in the nation.
Delaware County had a 12.3 percent Alzheimer’s rate for its population of 65 and above, or 12,000 people.
Using July 2023 data from the Alzheimer’s Association, Stacker mapped estimated Alzheimer’s rates among seniors 65 and older by state to pinpoint counties with the highest disease prevalence.
The rankings are estimates within .6 percentage points of actual values.
Philadelphia County has the highest rate of residents aged 65 and older with the disease in Pennsylvania, at 15 percent or around 34,000 people.
Montgomery County ranked fifth with 11.9 percent or 18,400 people.
Bucks County ranked in the middle for the state, coming in at No. 25, with 10.9 percent of its residents aged 65 and older living with the disease, or about 13,600 people.
Chester County came in with the lowest in the region at No. 32, with 10.8 percent and 9,900 people.
