PennDOT Discusses Plans for a Flexible Travel Lane on Blue Route

As the Blue Route celebrates its 35th anniversary, PennDOT engineers have hatched a plan to ease congestion.

PennDOT wants to build a flexible travel lane on I-476  in both directions in Delaware County and is holding an open house Tuesday to outline the project, writes Max Bennett for Patch.

The open house will take place from 6 to 8 PM at the Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road in Wallingford.

The flexible lane will be constructed between Route 3 and the I-95 interchanges and on southbound I-95 between the I-476 and U.S. 322 interchanges in Delaware County.

The inside shoulders of I-476 are being expanded to serve as travel lanes during congestion or traffic incidents.

Adaptive ramp metering will be used to adjust signals at the ramp entrances to manage vehicle flow from the on-ramps.

Visitors can review the improvement plans and displays for the project at the open house and are invited to discuss the different facets of the project with PennDOT’s design teams.

The I-476 Flex Lane project offers flexibility with recurring congestion based on prevailing and predicted traffic conditions, according to PennDOT.

PennDOT also held a live virtual public meeting on May 6. The meeting recording, comment form, and other project materials can be found here.
