The Newtown-Edgmont Angels, a Delco Little League senior challenger team, got up close with the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night at the Phillies-Marlins game at Citizens Bank Park, writes Nighel Thompson for KYW Newsradio.
Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm found out about the Angels through his agent, who’s worked with the team for years.
When Strahm signed with the Phillies in 2023, his agent introduced him to the Angels.
“They invited us out to a game Sunday night. We watched them and fell in love with them,” Strahm said.
Strahm returned the favor, inviting the little league team to the game at Citizens Bank Park.
The young players also received new belts and gloves with their nicknames stitched on the leather, and a tour of the clubhouse and stadium.
“They’re the happiest people on Earth, so to make them happier is kind of crazy. But they’re gonna talk about it for weeks, and every time I show up to the field, they’re all going to show me their gloves, so it’s cool,” Strahm said.
The Challenger Division is an adapted form of the game that caters to children and teenagers with physical and intellectual disabilities.
