Havertown native Michael McDermott, CEO of Kathmere Capital Management, played some top-level professional golf this past weekend at the Masters Tournament in Georgia, playing as a “marker,” writes Nick Vadala for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
It’s the second time in three years McDermott has had that honor.
A marker joins the game when an odd number of golfers participate in a tournament so one golfer isn’t playing alone. The marker plays alongside the golfer and keeps score.
On Saturday, he played next to player Tom Kim, who said McDermott likely shot somewhere in the 70s.
“He played great, actually,” Kim said. “Hits the ball really far. His irons, sometimes he grabbed one club longer than me. He was a complete baller.”
On Sunday, McDermott accompanied first-time Masters player Brian Campbell.
McDermott is well-known on the local golf scene, going back decades, dominating as an amateur golf champion.
Golf became his sport of choice when he went to St. Joseph’s University. He became a star player on the university’s golf team.
McDermott is in St. Joe’s athletic hall of fame, and the school’s website describes him as “one of the top golfers in school history.”
