A short-term plan to create a public woodland trail would get things started at Delaware County’s newest park, Delco Woods, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.
A Delco Woods Master Plan presented Wednesday to Delaware County Council does have a long-term vision for the park as well, but in the next 18 months a half-mile all-access paved Woodland Loop Trail can be created, providing access to the older forest on the Marple property.
Council is seeking a $500,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant to pay for the trail.
“What our team has put together is a really great introduction to the park,” County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer said, “Everyone can come into this park and really get into the forested part and experience it.”
The master plan includes elements suggested by thousands of residents through surveys and open house meetings.
The long-term vision for the Marple property focuses on conserving the forest and streams, improving the trail network, and creating a county-wide community resource.
That means trail markings and signs, building security, stormwater management, and a memorandum of understanding with the BMX group now using the parkland.
