Women dominate the healthcare field but are underrepresented in leadership roles.
One woman who has broken that glass ceiling is Shelly Buck, president of Riddle Hospital in Media, reports Stephanie Stahl for CBS News Philadelphia.
Buck was named president right before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down.
She managed the COVID response while also overseeing a major expansion of Riddle Hospital, part of Main Line Health.
Once just a small suburban hospital, Riddle has grown into a medical campus.
“The best reward has been seeing the transformation of Riddle Hospital without losing its core–the values, the commitment to the community, the support of the community, the employees,” Buck said.
She started her professional life as a registered nurse, bringing that perspective to her current role.
She didn’t aspire to be president of a hospital. She just wanted to provide good quality care to every person she came in contact with.
Now she’s committed to creating new opportunities for others, especially women.
“I just get so much joy, you know, in in doing this work, because I know it’s bigger than me. It’s not just about me, it’s about those lives that are entrusted in our hands.
