After another delay earlier this month, the SS United States is now reportedly scheduled to leave South Philadelphia on Monday morning, February 17, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.
If all goes as currently planned, the historic ocean liner will be towed from its longtime home at Pier 82 at 2:47 PM on Friday, Feb. 14.
From there, the ship would be towed down the Delaware River on Monday at 11:18 AM. It would then begin a two-week journey to Mobile, Alabama, and undergo preparations for its ultimate future as the world’s largest artificial reef.
In September 2024, Okaloosa County acquired the SS United States for $1 million, putting an end to years of efforts by the SS United States Conservancy to preserve the ship.
Over the past several months, a number of rescheduling took place in beginning its move from South Philly to Florida.
Tugboats are set to move the ship to Pier 80 and maneuver it onto the Delaware River on Monday morning. From there, it will be towed south during low tide, which would allow it the room needed to pass underneath the Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Delaware Memorial bridges.
