Over the last 50 years, the Women’s Resource Center of Greater Philadelphia has worked to help local young girls and women, writes Racquel Williams for KYW Newsradio.
Since its creation, this nonprofit organization has provided aid to women struggling with difficult life transitions such as divorce, the passing of a spouse, or job loss.
The center, located in Wayne, offers a variety of services, helping women get access to education, financial counseling, and housing.
The assistance they offer has no time limit, allowing women to take advantage of these resources for as long as they need.
The center’s executive director, Elizabeth Monroe, said women are still viewed as their children’s primary caregivers but aren’t always given the support they need.
The organization’s financial stability services program helps women gain financial independence.
Another one of their services, their Girls Lead program, shares life and leadership skills with middle and high school girls.
“We have to fill the void of what is not happening now,” said Monroe, “so really, our voice and what we are doing to drive women’s issues and empower women, and help women and support women in the community is now even more critical than it was before.”
