Delco Nonprofit Celebrating 50 Years of Improving Adult Literacy

The Delaware County Literacy Council has spent the last five decades working to improve adult literacy in Delaware County.

The Delaware County Literacy Council is celebrating five decades of improving adult literacy in the Delaware County area, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The nonprofit organization has helped approximately 20,000 adults improve their writing, reading, language, and math skills since their founding in 1975.

Colleen Duran, the council’s executive director, said their organization has come a long way since its creation. Personalized tutoring, free online and in-person classes, and additional support services are offered to help adults thrive.

There are several programs available, including Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency and GED preparation, English as a Second Language, Digital Literacy, and career development services and employment coaching.

The organization, located at 2217 Providence Ave. in Chester, seeks to help adults achieve their career goals as well. Employment coaches are available to assist with job searches, creating resumes, and securing stable employment.

The council hopes to extend its reach and improve the lives of more adults in the Greater Philadelphia area.

“The need for adult education services continues to grow,” noted the board chair, Rick Durante. “Our 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of our past achievements, but a renewed commitment to serving our community for decades to come.”
