Zookeepers at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown are busy making sure that all of the animals are kept warm and safe during the freezing temperatures, writes Deanna Durante for NBC10 Philadelphia.

While many of the animals are no strangers to cold weather, the current incredibly low temperatures are making even the most seasoned barn animals seek out extra warmth. To combat this the zoo is using additional blankets, heated mats, and water bowl warmers for its residents.

“In the wintertime, we have to maintain that warm temperature,” said Kara Kulak of the Elmwood Park Zoo. “We typically don’t want to get below 65 in here.”

As most animals are kept indoors, the zoo employees are also now finding new ways to keep them entertained. Some big cats are getting an extra spritz.

“There is a men’s cologne; it’s called obsession, that big cats across the board love,” said zookeeper Janine Farmer.

Elmwood Park Zoo is kicking off its annual appeal for donations, which should help keep the animals warm and entertained.

“We are still open year-round; we still have guests that come through,” said Kulak.
